Abstract

This article aims to study the development of Arabic poetry from its early phase to its modern one. Having used a historical-diachronic study of form and content of Arabic poetry, this article concludes that Arabic poetry, as the oldest genre in the Arabic literary tradition, has hardly developed. Not until  the 20th century, more commonly known in the history of Arabic literature as As}r al-Nahd}ah, that the awareness of the absence of creativity in Arabic poetry and external factors due to the interaction of Arab with the West have given birth the seeds of modern Arabic poetry. At least, there are five schools of modern Arabic poetry, namely: Neo Classical (al-Muhāfizun) with such its central figures as Mahmud Sami and Ahmad al-Barudi Syauqy; Western Romanticism, which was pioneered by Khalil Mutran; Madrasah Dīwān, which was propagandized by Abd al-Rahman Shukri, Abbas Mahmud al-'Aqad, and Ibrahim Abd al-Qadir al-Mazini; Madrasah Apollo, which was carried by Ahmad Zaki Abu Syadi; and Madrasah al-Muhajir, which is pioneered by Jibran Khalil Jibran. Each has contributed their part in Arabic poetry formally as well as contentially. Those schools have became a tradition of modern Arabic poetry. The emergence of modern Arabic poetic tradition has been accompanied by three general pattern-  the influence of literary patterns of the more advanced cultures, the escapism, and the search for identity.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the implementation of approximation technique in clause restructuring to produce a target language text, which is functionally equivalent with its source language counterpart. It is deliberately designed to analyze existential clauses contained in an English novel along with its Indonesian translation. Four basic steps, which has been taken to process the data, are (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) data analysis, and (4) inference. It is revealed that a number of restructuring phases are employed to achieve functional equivalence. These phases are taken due to the fact that the basic elements of existential clauses in English do not have any one-to-one formal correspondence with their counterpart in Indonesian. Through approximation technique, existential clauses are then restructured according to their communicative or interactive functions. Clauses, which refers to existence, are restructured to form clauses on "being", while those, which refers to events, are restructured according to their types or categories.

Abstract

This qualitative research is aimed at describing the phonological features of the Arabic elements used in the communication of the Arabic migrant community of Surakarta. It is assumed that the long contact with Austronesian languages, i.e. Indonesian and Javanese, as languages of the majority gives significant influence on the language they maintain from their ancestors. The main data are the lexicon list of the Arabic elements used in the community, and the supporting data are the system of classical/ standard Arabic and information on their ancestors’ Arabic dialect as a comparison. To get the lexicon data of the Arabic in Surakarta, the interview is done, whereas the data of the system of Classical Arabic and the ancestors’ dialect are gathered using interview and library research methods. In the analysis, the writer applies comparative method using the theory of language change.  After examining closely and analyzing the data, the writer comes to a conclusion that the Arabic language elements used in the Arabic migrant group in Surakarta has undergone several phonological modifications in which most of the features show strong influences of the language of the majority, and some shows the modification of their ancestors’ dialect.

Abstract

This article examines the translation of Arabic tenses expression into Indonesian. This library research employs a descriptive analysis method based on Catford’s theoretical translation framework. This study finds that, firstly, from the extension of translation perspective, the tense expression in Arabic can be translated fully into Indonesian, in which all of the Arabic tense expression has the Indonesian equivalence. Linguistically speaking, in certain cases the translation of Arabic verbs both mādī (perfect) and mudāri’ (imperfect) has to be added with an Indonesian temporal adverb.  The auxiliary verb kāna, which usually combined with mudāri’ verb in Arabic past tense is translated into Indonesian adverb of time: “dulu”, “dahulu”, or “tadi”. Secondly, the expression of Arabic future tense, which constitutes mudāri’ verb, prefix “sa_” or particle “saufa,” is also translated into “akan”. The mādī (perfect) verb, which is used in the context of wishing, is translated into Indonesian equivalence verb - “semoga”. Thirdly, In translating Arabic into Indonesian, context (siyāq) comes into play, not all Arabic verbs denotes definite tense in a sentence

Abstract

This article aims at studying narrative structure of the story of Saint Khidir (Nabi Khidir) in the Koran by questioning its meaning, its structure and  fuction. The narrative approach is used in examining the story. It turns out that like any other stories in the Koran, the story of saint Khidir has a simple structure of narrative (ijaz).  The narrative structure of the story aims at strengthening the faith to Alloh through its thematic values. The story also informs us the social context of the given time and prophet Mohammad’s psychological realm in his preaching. The story gives tremendous moral value to Arabic society in giving meaning to their selves and their surroundings.

Abstract

This article discusses how an African woman faces the postcolonial complexity as presented in the poem “Song of Lawino” (1966), written by Okot p’Bitek, an Uganda writer. The postcolonial complexity here means the difficult situation of decolonizing process as a result of a cultural clash between local African and Western culture, which has been internalized by some African people. The internalization of the Western culture creates  self-hatred racism of African people, political group dispute, woman oppression, and mimicry. Using postcolonial perspective, which is proposed by Franz Fanon, Aime Caesar, and Homi K. Bhaba, the writer analyzes how this poem portrays three phenomena of postcolonial complexity. This postcolonial complexity is investigated through the conflict and the characters in the poem.

Abstract

Cultural studies in the development of humanities studies is now in a problematic position, if not the opposite. While cultural studies pivot on the practice of meaning in the context of change, humanities sciences nowadays dwell on the mastery of knowledge and skills. It tends to forget its original purpose as studies that aim to humanize humans. To resolve this problem so that both have creative power, the humanities studies must have the courage to present the studies in three-channel mode, namely political, textual and post-disciplinary. Meanwhile, to preserve its anticipatory power, cultural studies must no longer shy to enter the territory of aesthetics and ethics in its studies.
